Spotlight on throwers

Jamaica Gleaner / Raymond Graham, Gleaner Writer The Big Shot Invitational meet for local throwers is on today at Excelsior High School starting at 8:30 a.m.

The meet has been shifted to Excelsior as the organisers could no longer afford to rent the UWI Usain Bolt Stadium.

"We had no choice but to switch the venue as we cannot afford to pay for the usage of the Usain Bolt Stadium," said meet organiser Michael Vassell.

Vassell is looking forward to today's staging as he expects a big turnout.

"This is a very crucial event for the top teams at "Champs" and more than 320 entries from over 33 schools have been received so far and I expect more before today's start time," he said.

Vassell added that there is big interest in the throws because of recent success at the international level where Jamaica has produced a World Youth champion, World Junior medallist and Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

With the expected close battles for top honours at Champs this year today's performances among the various athletes will give some good indicators. Among the girls, Edwin Allen High who have dominated the throws in previous years, will be challenged strongly this year by Hydel and St Jago. While, among the boys, top school Calabar should get good competition from Petersfield High, Jamaica College and Kingston College.

Following her impressive performances at the Pure Water JC Invitational meet, where she broke the Champs record in Class One discus with a personal best of 50.40 metres and a 14.96 metres mark in the shot put, Edwin Allen's, Rochelle Frazer, will be hoping to continue her good form.

Calabar High will once again parade their strong depth in the throws with the likes of Warren Barrett, Renaldo Walcott and Caesar Kemp in Class One. Jamaica College's Vashon McCarthy and Edwin Allen's Demar Gayle should also do well.
